Pam Perlich, Ph.D. works as a Senior Research Economist in the Bureau of Economic and Business Research at the University of Utah. In addition, she is Professor Adjunct in the College of Architecture + Planning. Before joining the Bureau, she worked for seven years in the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget concentrating on long-term economic and demographic projections. Pamela specializes in Utah demographics, applied regional economic studies, and economic and demographic modeling.

She received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Utah and B.S. in Economics and Business from the University of Tulsa. Her hometown is Tulsa, Oklahoma and she relocated to Utah in 1986.

November Friday Forum

This month's Friday Forum was an excellent event. It was great to welcome our new members to the Chamber! We had the privilege of hearing from Alema Harrington. Harrington is the current host of the pre,half, and post game shows for award winning television broadcasts of the Utah Jazz on The Root Sports Network. He is a sports radio talk show host on 1320 KFNZ. Harrington is a Broadcaster for JAZZLIVE. He has a lot of experience with working with the media and the Utah Jazz. He gave great advice and insight into team work. As business leaders, he said you want to look for individuals that will do whatever it takes for their team to win. He tied in basketball to his presentation and explained how you must help the helper - in regards to finding success in work and business. You must understand and know the culture because when you land an account, you become a part of their team.

Harrington left us with 5 C's that represent lessons we can learn from basketball that will help us with business as well as with relationships we have and will have in the future.

Alema Harrington has been working in front of the camera for nearly two decades. He is currently the host of “Jazz Live”, the Pre, Half and Post Game shows for the emmy award winning television broadcasts of the Utah Jazz Basketball team on the Root Sports Network. Alema is also the host of “Powerhouse”, a daily sports talk radio show on 1320 KFNZ. Harrington is the host of the pre and post game shows for BYU Football on BYUtv, which is seen in nearly 200 countries and territories. Alema Harrington’s winning personality attracts supporters across all demographics, and he is a highly sought after public speaker.

Harrington started his broadcast career in Hawaii as a sports reporter at the top rated radio station. He parlayed that in to a job as a television sports anchor in the Islands and became the host of “Hawaiian Sports Adventure” on ESPN. After a year and a half in the TV business Harrington moved to Utah to become one of the states most popular sports personalities. He anchored the award winning Saturday sports show “SportsBeat” for six years and covered all sports from the Olympic Games to the NBA Finals.

In 2002 Alema returned to Hawaii to take a job as the sports director at the top rated television station in the state (KHON). While there he also became the voice of the local Arena2 franchise, “The Hawaiian Islanders”, and produced and hosted their weekly TV show. After being back in Hawaii for three years Harrington returned to Utah and launched a popular radio program called the “Red and Blue” show. The former BYU running back carried the Blue portion of the show and was able to connect with listeners and drive ratings to an all time high for that time slot.

In 2006 Harrington returned to TV in Utah as the color analyst for the Utah Blaze, and soon after was hired by KJZZ Television to host a weekly Show called “A-Game”. “A-Game” was built around Alema’s ability to identify with his audience. “A-Game” was an instant success and soon KJZZ upped the ante and created a nightly sports show Powerhouse, which Harrington hosted from 2008 through 2010. “Powerhouse” won several broadcasting awards and opened the door for Alema to become a full time member of the Utah Jazz Television Broadcast team.

Harrington and his wife reside in Utah and he is the father of three children.

Harrington has also made appearances on National television and radio programs and has been featured in a number of Television Series’. He had a role in the Feature Film “Forever Strong”.

The Chamber Welcomes Aflac Insurance Agent Cathy White

Cathy White became an insurance agent with Aflac in July of 2011 when she moved to Utah. Having worked in health care for over 20 years, she was looking for a way to help people that did not require work in hospitals.

Aflac which is an acronym for American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus (Georgia) is a different kind of supplemental insurance company. Aflac wants to assure the well being of its clients in times of significant illness or injury by paying the client money based on the severity of the illness or accident which can be used to pay necessary household expenses such as mortgage/rent or utilities. Aura of Autumn

On Friday, Sept. 30th, the Utah Valley Women's Division with the Chamber of Commerce held it's annual Aura of Autumn event. There were great musical performances with Johnny Revill singing "Don't take the girl" and "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis, - performances by the Cameo Club with shiny tops and a great song played on the tambourines, as well as the piano played by Hannah - Miss Orem.

Leslie put on a fantastic fashion show featuring 16 models wearing beautiful gowns. Ranging in age from 18-84 years, each were very accomplished women!

The award presentation at the end of the event was sure a highlight for everyone. Gayla Muir was presented the award for "Women Making a Difference." Gayla's sister gave a special tribute to recognize and show appreciation for her amazing service and accomplishments.

We are glad we had the privilege to attend such a special event and enjoyed visiting with friends and making new ones.

This week our Government Review Council met with Representative Dean Sanpei to discuss healthcare reform as it relates to the United States and Utah.

Much of our discussion was based around Medicaid reform and Utah's Health Exchange. Representative Sanpei shared ideas about changing incentives so physicians are paid for their quality and patients get more involved with the program. Educating Medicaid patients is key in helping them understand the importance of taking care of themselves after procedures, so that doctors do not have to see them multiple times after already taking care of the problem once. The Exchange would be a portal for people to buy insurance, which would have two advantages: Defined Contribution - which means businesses would pay fixed amounts
Portability of Insurance - which means if an individual works for a company and moves, they would be able to take their old insurance with them.

Again, we had a great discussion and look forward to our next GRC meeting!

This morning we held our first Friday Forum of the year at the Provo Marriott with a great turn out. We had the privilege to hear from Dr. Craig Manning. He expressed the importance of our mind being a tool and using it as such. To maximize our potential, we need to channel our training. We may be working our hardest, but we may not be exercising our minds. We need to not only work hard, but work smart.

Dr. Manning also taught us that growth will always be greater if we strengthen what we are already doing well. It is important to build both a mental and emotional skill set. He gave us great tips on how to strengthen and improve those skills. He presented a formula for success: Potential + Training -Interference = CONTROL. In Dr. Manning's words, "Today is my day - I'm making it happen."

One cannot drive the streets of downtown Provo without taking note of the 147,000 Sq. Ft. building being erected on Center Street. The Utah Valley Convention Center met a milestone in its construction phase this past month with a “topping out” ceremony to commemorate the last piece of steel lowered into place to complete the structure. There are still 8 more months of work to finish the exterior and interior of the convention center but the steel shell along with majority of heavy crane work is complete.

The Utah Valley Convention Center has been in the minds of local officials for some time. Many subscribe to the “if you build it, they will come” phrase to enhance the economic impact of the community.

As far back as 2010 there was interest in the facility of a meeting planner named Lenore located in Springville. She has been affiliated with the Siberian Husky Club of America for years and previously space would not allow for their national annual showcase to be held in Utah County. When she found out about the convention center she worked diligently with her board to bring the event here in October of 2012. So come that fall, the best husky show dogs in the nation will be in town. For the community it means - Over 550 hotel room nights and 5-6 days of restaurant needs for the 250+ participants not to mention local shopping, entertainment and recreation. That was just the first group, many more are reserving space….

UV Chamber of Commerce Redistricting Resolution

Redistricting Matters to Utah County Businesses

Whereas, state governments redraw district boundaries every ten years based on the results of the most recent census and reapportionment results, and

Whereas, using results from the 2010 census, the Utah State Legislature is redrawing districts for the United States House of Representatives, the Utah House of Representatives, the Utah Senate, and the Utah State Board of Education, and

Whereas, redistricting ensures that each citizen’s vote carries the same weight and preserves the ideal of “one person, one vote”, and

Whereas, the Utah legislature has created a redistricting committee made up of legislators from around the state, and

Whereas, there has been established, fundamental core standards to which, the 2011 Redistricting Committee must adhere as they draw maps; namely

1. Congressional Districts must be nearly equal as practical with a deviation not greater than +- .1%

2. State legislative districts and state school board districts must have substantial equality of population among the various districts with a deviation not greater than +-3.5%.

3. Districts will be single member districts.

4. Plans will be drawn to create four Congressional Districts, 29 State Senate Districts, 75 State House Districts and 15 State School Board Districts.

5. In drawing districts, the official population enumeration of the 2010 decimal census will be used.

6. Districts will be contiguous and reasonably compact.

And whereas, the 2010 census tally found that total resident Utah population is 2,763,885, and

Whereas, the same census found that the total resident Utah County population is 516,564, and

Whereas, the same census found that an ideal district size for a Congressional seat is 690,971, for a State Senate seat 95,306, for a State House seat 36,852, for a State School Board seat 184,259, and

Whereas, as mentioned above a redistricting plan must take into account traditional redistricting criteria such as compactness, contiguity, and respect for political subdivision lines and communities of interest, and

Whereas, Utah County is clearly a reasonably compact, contiguous community of interest with political subdivision lines, and

Whereas, the way lines are drawn can keep a community together or split it apart, leaving it without a representative who feels responsible for its concerns, and

Whereas, the way lines are drawn can change who wins an election, and

Whereas, based on census criteria, Utah County merits most of one Congressional District, and

Whereas, based on census criteria, Utah County merits representation of 5.42 State Senate seats, and

Whereas, based on census criteria, Utah County merits representation of 14.02 State House seats, and

Whereas, multiple preliminary redistricting proposals for Congress, State Senate and State House split up Utah County in ways that significantly diminish its reasonably compact, contiguous community of interest with political subdivision lines,

Whereas, Utah County has no representation on the 2011 Senate redistricting committee despite being the state’s second largest county, representing nearly one in five state residents, and

Whereas, in 2001 Utah County received less representation than it merited in Congress and State Senate with districts created with a majority of people outside Utah County, forcing a significant proportion of Utah County to be represented by people who live outside Utah County, and

Whereas, 2001 redistricting has caused Utah County to be under represented in State and Federal government for the last 10 years, and

Whereas, in the interest of accountability and fairness, Utah County’s citizens merit representation of those who live in Utah County.

Therefore, let it be resolved that the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce strongly urges the Utah Legislature and the 2011 Redistricting Committee to do the following:

Ensure that all of Utah County is in one Congressional District.

Ensure that Utah County receives at least five State Senate seats each of which are wholly inside Utah County or more than five State Senate seats with the majority of people in each district in Utah County.

Ensure that Utah County receives at least 14 State House seats each of which are wholly inside Utah County or more than 14 State House seats with the majority of the people in each district in Utah County.

Furthermore, let it be resolved that if Utah County does not receive the representation it merits, we encourage Utah County business and government leaders to use all means at their disposal to fight for merited Utah County representation.

Furthermore, be it resolved that a copy of this resolution be sent to each member of the redistricting committee and each member of elected and appointed leadership in both the Utah House and Senate, Governor Herbert, Utah County Commissioners and the Mayor of each Utah County city.

“Cloud computing” is a new generation of computing that uses distant servers for data storage and management. Placing key applications from your business in the “clouds” can save you a lot of money here on Earth.

No matter the size of the business, cloud computing offers efficiencies, cost savings and peace of mind. Here, we’ll outline the benefits of certain cloud applications so that you can better protect, access and leverage your data.

Backup is one popular use of cloud computing. Business owners have lots of options to securely backup their data into a ‘cloud’ or servers hosted by trusted companies. One service, Mozy, allows users to upload photos, business documents, financial records and other digital files. And, backups can be performed according to an automatic schedule.

For businesses ready to move beyond backup and leverage other IT services in the cloud, there are tremendous cost savings. The Yankee Group recently analyzed one year’s cost for two email and messaging options for a hypothetical business of 25 employees. In a traditional model, the business relied on Microsoft Exchange and Outlook with servers located on premises. The other option allowed the business to use Cloud Services by Microsoft® from Comcast Business Class.

In the example where technology is located in-house, the business might spend $14,000 a year on software licensing, maintenance and cost of servers, backup and support. With the cloud computing option – costs were cut to $2,463. That’s an 80 percent reduction in cost!

If you’re considering cloud computing, here’s a checklist of questions to consider:

Is the company credible? Ask if they have security at all levels including physical, network, application, internal systems and operating systems security. Investigate the company as you would any major business partner. You’re safe with companies like Microsoft, and there are others that are highly regarded.
Are my people well trained? In small business, there is always a risk when undergoing a major change – especially in IT. Before moving to the cloud or making any other major IT change, make sure you have a training and transition plan.
Will I need help to make the transition? Some businesses hire someone to help them make the transition. You want to get it right if you are transferring your email from one system to the cloud. Consider bringing in someone who has done this before. Check their references.
Is my recovery plan strong enough? An automatic backup plan is great. Surely, you will sleep more securely knowing that if there’s a business disruption, your data is safe. Yet a disaster recovery plan is more than about data. Your people will need equipment and know-how to get to the data during a disaster.

Most recently heard singing jazz at The Shops at Riverwoods, Connie Jensen is comfortable performing in a variety of venues. A regular performer at Riverwoods, she is equally at home singing jazz, musical theatre and classical music and has been a featured soloist in concerts in Salt Lake, Park City, and Utah County, as well as in Nevada and California. Connie graduated in May 2011 with a Master's degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Utah and currently teaches voice at Utah Valley University, where she has also been a featured soloist with the Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra and Wind Symphony.

Fortunate to be singing and teaching, Connie loves doing both and frequently features her students in her concerts at UVU and in the community, where they have opportunities to perform with a jazz combo as well as with versatile accompanist, Aaron Foster.

If you were to drive the circumference of the earth at the equator, you would put 24,901 miles on your odometer. Pastor Logan Wolf and his wife, Grayson, put 37,264 miles on theirs getting to Utah from North Carolina. Of course, that wasn’t a beeline. That distance was traveled over a period of sixteen months, throughout five states, as they raised financial support in order to start a church here in Provo.

Logan, a graduate of Southeastern Free Will Baptist College, and Grayson, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, moved to Provo on May 12. They have since been working diligently to start New Morning Free Will Baptist Church (newmorningchurch.com) and are currently preparing for a series of preview services (June 26, July 31, August 28) and the Grand Opening Service on September 25.

New Morning is here to provide everyone an opportunity to have a genuine experience with God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is here to help people develop meaningful connections that will support them in their spiritual growth. Finally, it is here to assist people in finding purpose in life through service by involving them in opportunities to reach out to others in their own community, across the country, and around the world in the name of Christ.

First Flight at Provo Municipal Airport

The first Frontier Airlines flight from Denver to Provo will land at the
Provo Municipal Airport on Monday night, June 20, 2011.

The public is invited to tour the airport's recently completed terminal annex
attached to the Million Air facility, 3421 West Mike Jense Parkway, from
8 to 9:30 p.m., and watch the Frontier Airlines Embraer 190 jet land at
9:15 p.m. There will be a ribbon-cutting for the new terminal annex at
8:30 p.m.

Later, Provo Fire & Rescue will greet the incoming plane with
a water cannon salute, an industry tradition for new service at an
airport. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will

Intermountain Healthcare partners with the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce for Friday Forum

The Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly Friday forum on Friday April 8, at 8 a.m. at the Downtown Provo Marriott. Kye Nordfelt and Rep. Brad Daw will be headlining the event.

Kye Nordfelt, research analyst and Coalition Coordinator of the Substance Misuse and Abuse Reduction Team (SMART) at the Utah County Division of Substance Abuse, will discuss what business owners can do to prevent substance abuse among employees.

SMART was established in 2007 to prevent alcohol and prescription narcotic drug abuse among individuals living in Utah County. Through SMART, Kye has worked to reduce the availability of pain pills and pass legislation aimed at increasing the availability of prescription drug disposal sites.

Rep. Brad Daw, R-Orem, will join Kye in speaking at the forum. Rep. Daw will discuss what policy makers are doing to prevent substance abuse in Utah County. Daw joined SMART in 2008 and immediately became a key player in the fight against drug abuse in Utah County.

“We are so pleased to have Kye and Brad at this event,” says Chamber President Steve Densley. “The Chamber is committed to giving Utah businesses every opportunity to succeed. Employee drug abuse is a real problem that Utah business owners must face in order to improve business productivity and the personal lives of employees. This is an issue we cannot ignore.”

Of the estimated 14.8 million substance abusers in the United States, 77 percent or 9.4 million are employed. Costs associated with workers with substance abuse problems can be substantial.

Roney was one of the founders of Nu Skin and served as its president and CEO from its inception in 1984 until 1996, when he took on the chairman position. Today, Nu Skin Enterprises is one of the largest direct-selling companies in the world, and operates in 48 markets throughout the Americas, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

In addition, Roney is a founding member of Nu Skin’s Force for Good Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to improve the lives of children by offering hope for a life free from disease, illiteracy, and poverty. Since its founding in 1996, the Foundation has granted nearly $20 million to life-changing projects that benefit children in more than 50 countries.

Most recently, one of Roney’s investment groups purchased The Shops at Riverwoods in Provo, Utah. Utah’s first open-air mall is now a pedestrian-only shopping, dining, and entertainment center that is geared to Utah Valley families.

Five Businesses, Married with Kids...Inspired Yet?

If you haven’t taken advantage of the Chamber University…you should. Every third Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to about 11 a.m., the Chamber invites one of the countless qualified individuals within the valley to inspire, counsel and share their thoughts and experiences on a business related topic.

This Thursday was no exception!

Held at the Zion’s Bank facility on 800 N. in Orem, Chamber members soaked in knowledge and sat in awe as Kim Flynn, the Queen of five businesses and master of multi-tasking inspired and motivated through theory’s and thoughts.

You heard right! Mrs. Flynn is a proud owner of five successful businesses and only works 20 hours a week. Her businesses range from real estate, fashion consulting to coaching on a professional level. Her success and happiness has been found through a strategic and analytic approach which she shared today in the form of a brainstorming worksheet which we have attached with this post.

As we know we could never explain this as well as Mrs. Flynn, we will walk you though each box to the best of our ability in hopes that this will help you manage your time and move successfully forward into 2011.

The top two boxes are self explanatory. You put your company’s name in the blank box, and your name in the one that say CEO.

Next, go to the bottom right-hand corner and fill in the four small boxes with what your DREAM work hours each week should be, and what you realistically put in each week in the YOUR REALITY BOX.

Now, the six boxes branching off of the CEO box are there for you to list all the related tasks you do each week. The smaller boxes towards the bottom of each column are meant to hold all the related tasks that you do quarterly.

Once you have compiled a thorough list, you will realize that your reality time you spend each week at work might be smaller than what you actually put in. Add up all the time you are at work, subtract that number from your reality time, and this will give you your STRESS FACTOR. If your number is higher than five, and not even close to what your dream was, you might consider re-evaluating your time and what’s most important to you to help your stress level, or factor go down.

Mrs. Flynn closed the lecture with one question and challenge which is applicable to everyone. “In the next 24 hours, what am I going to do to make this dream come true?”

PROVO, Utah, September 8, 2010—The Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the annual Utah Valley Executive Summit at Sundance resort on September 22, from 7:30 AM-4:00 PM. This annual lecture series has been a favorite of Chamber members and Utah Valley community leaders for over a decade.

“The Executive Summit is one of the most comprehensive seminars in the state of its kind,” said Steve Densley, Chamber President. “The Chamber has tried to bring to the community the most knowledgeable people on the most important topics we could identify for business leaders.”

UDOT Provides Tools for Short-haul Truckers and Delivery Drivers

Benjamin Franklin’s adage “time is money,” is especially true for businesses that depend on making timely deliveries and business calls. For these businesses, being delayed in traffic or behind road closures can affect the bottom line.

With the Utah County I-15 Corridor Expansion (I-15 CORE) well underway from Lehi to Spanish Fork, UDOT is reaching out to businesses that require frequent freeway usage – the short-haul trucker, delivery operator, and home service provider – to help them TravelWise, work around construction inconveniences and safeguard their business operations.

UDOT offers website tools to help these drivers plan ahead. The I-15 CORE Construction Hot Spots interactive map (udot.utah.gov/i15core) provides information on closures along the project and also gives real-time traffic delays on I-15 and local streets. UDOT’s i-truck program (itruck.utah.gov) provides closure and construction delays for trucking operations statewide and alternate routes for larger vehicles. Both provide weekly e-mail updates of the latest construction information as well as Facebook, Twitter and text alerts.

To help keep business moving and adapt to construction specifically on I-15 CORE, UDOT will host a Driver and Dispatcher Information Meeting. This meeting is designed to answer questions, share the most current information about the project and introduce useful information sources to help businesses manage freeway usage efficiently.

There will be two times and locations for the meeting, in order to accommodate as many businesses as possible. The first will be at the UDOT Region 2 Hurley Conference Room, 2010 South 2760 West, Salt Lake City, on August 30, 2010, 9-11 a.m. The second will be held at the Historic County Courthouse, 151 N.
